Description:

  • The next book club is scheduled for January 17th. The next book we're reading is All Hands on Deck: A Modern Day High Seas Adventure to the Far Side of the World by Will Sofrin.

Tasked with a high seas adventure of their own, a ragtag crew of misfits is hired to sail an eighteen century warship six thousand miles to Hollywood. Patrick O'Brian's beloved, best-selling historical novel series was being adapted to the silver screen, and Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany had signed on for Master and Commander: Far Side of the World. Only one problem: The Rose, the replica warship the filmmakers had purchased for the production, was very much on the far side of the world, Newport, Rhode Island, two oceans away from California and the production team.

That's where thirty oddballs and tall-ship fanatics, including author Will Safrin, come in. Safrin was, at the time, a twenty-one-year-old wooden-boat builder and yacht racer looking for some direction in his life. What followed was an epic adventure and race against the clock, Mother Nature, and fellow crewmates to deliver the Rose to Hollywood, hopefully in one piece. The crew of the Rose effectively went back in time, brought to life the old ways of a forgotten world, and barely lived to tell the tale.

Join us on Friday, January 17th at 11:30AM as we discuss Sofrin's account of this unforgettable voyage.
