Weaving Class: Creative Aging Series

Overview

Learn how to weave using recycled materials in this set of six 1.5-hour classes that meet in the West Orange Public Library. Participants will create their own works of art by weaving plastic and fabric strips made from reused shopping bags and discarded garments. The program is geared toward older adults and is guided by two goals—to have participants develop a new artmaking skill through a sequential learning process and to create social engagement opportunities through the process of learning and making mixed material weavings. It will culminate in a presentation of the finished artworks to which participants’ family, friends and members of the library community will be invited.

 Class Parameters

The class is limited to 15 participants. Participants register for the class with the understanding that they are committing to the six sessions, which are held once a week on the same day and time. All materials, except for the plastic bags, are provided by the library. Of course, there are occasions when there is unavoidable absence, but the idea is to commit to the class as the lessons will build sequentially. Participants will gather plastic bags individually to be used in the class.
