Friends Friday: Belle da Costa Greene, the Personal Librarian: A Major Retrospective at the Morgan Library
Learn about the storied life and legacy of Belle da Costa Greene, one of the most remarkable librarians in American history. Her life and career, popularized in the best-selling book The Personal Librarian, is the subject of an upcoming exhibit at the Morgan Library and Museum, which is marking the 2024 Centennial Celebration of its existence as a public institution. As personal librarian to financier J. P. Morgan, Jr., Belle was instrumental in amassing the museum's extraordinary collection.
Erica Ciallela, a public historian and the exhibition's curator, will trace Belle's life from her roots in a largely black community in Washington, D.C, to her enduring legacy using many of the museum's extraordinary resources.**
The exhibit opens on October 25, 2024 and runs though May 4, 2025. The Morgan Museum, 225 Madison Avenue at 36th Street, New York, NY 10016.
**Will be held in-person at the Teaneck Municipal Building North, 818 Teaneck Road, in the first floor Council Chambers.
