Movie Club

Do you love movies and discussing them with others? Then join the library movie club! 

This is a watch first, meet later group. Pick up a copy of the movie from the library and watch at your own convenience, then meet at the library on the first Thursday morning of the month for a lively discussion with some light refreshments. 

Copies will be available at the front desk.

January 8 at 10 AM - Camille (1936)

A stately but sickly Paris courtesan is swept off her feet by an equally enamored diplomat, but she leaves him to protect his career, only to later be reunited with him---briefly and tragically.

February 12 at 10 AM - A Raisin in the Sun (1961)

A black family living in a cramped Chicago tenement in the 1940s have the opportunity to improve their social standing via an insurance-policy check, but are in disagreement about how best to spend the windfall. Lorraine Hansberry adapted the script from her hit Broadway play. 

March 12 at 10 AM - Double Indemnity (1944)

An insurance salesman is seduced by a conniving woman into a scheme to murder her husband and make it look like an accident in order to collect his impressive life insurance policy.

April 9 at 10 AM - The Searchers (1956)

John Wayne stars with his son Patrick Wayne, Ward Bond and Natalie Wood in this classic Western about a Civil War veteran from Texas who will stop at nothing to find the men who murdered his family.

May 14 at 10 AM - A River Runs Through It (1992)

A memoir of two very different brothers---one reserved, the other a hell-raiser---angling for the attention of their preacher father, who uses fly-fishing as a metaphor to teach his Cain and Abel offspring about life in early 20th-century Montana.

June 11 at 10 AM - Dr. Strangelove (1964)

A fanatical U.S. general launches a nuclear attack on Russia during the Cold War, but the President and his advisors are shocked to learn that the Russians have technology that will destroy the world in the event of an attack on them.

July 9 at 10 AM - All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)

A young German soldier's eagerness to serve his country quickly fades when he witnesses the horrors of combat on the Western Front during World War I.

September 10 at 10 AM - When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal star as two best friends of the opposite sex in the blockbuster, heartwarming romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally. Harry Burns (Crystal--Analyze This) and Sally Albright (Ryan--In the Land of Women) meet when the share a car on a trip from Chicago to New York right after both graduate from college. As the two build their lives and careers in Manhattan, they find love and heartache--with other people--but their paths continue to cross and their friendship continues to grow over the years ... until they confront the decision whether to let their friendship develop into romance.

October 8 at 10 AM - Parasite (2019)

Bong Joon Ho brings his singular skillset home to Korea in this pitch-black modern fairytale. Meet the Park Family: the picture of aspirational wealth. And the Kim Family, rich in street smarts but not much else. Be it chance or fate, these two houses are brought together and the Kims sense a golden opportunity. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist to the Parks. Soon, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. The Kims provide “indispensable” luxury services while the Parks give the Kims a way out of their shabby circumstances. But this new ecosystem is fragile, and soon enough greed and class prejudice threaten to upend the Kims’ newfound comfort.

November 12 at 10 AM - My Left Foot (1989)

Daniel Day-Lewis and Brenda Fricker won Oscars for their performances in this moving biography of Dublin artist Christy Brown, who was afflicted with cerebral palsy.

December 10 at 10 AM - How Green Was My Valley (1941)

This Best Picture winner is an account of early 20th-century life with a hard-working, fun-loving family in a Welsh coal-mining village, where they deal with love, death, union strikes and bullying. John Ford won Best Director and Donald Crisp was a Supporting Actor Oscar winner as the paterfamilias.
