The Creative Flowering of the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson

With Dave Gebroe

Brian Wilson, the main creative force behind The Beach Boys throughout their unparalleled 1960s run, experienced a peerless creative renaissance that I believe to be the most inspiring and fertile period in any artist’s life ever, in any medium. He didn’t just make his art… His art was his life. His life was his art, his art was his art, his joy was his art, his new friends were his art… all of it together was a celebration of life, a space he was unfortunately never really able to inhabit again for various reasons: family pressure, career pressure, drugs, mental illness, and the expectations that come along with being a genius. This presentation, which combines a lecture with music and interview clips from my podcast, explores the 10-year period from 1958 to 1968, illustrating how Brian Wilson creatively soared and, much like the myth of Icarus, flew directly into the sun
