About the program

If you are just starting out on your path through family history, this interactive and informative lecture, Introduction to Hispanic Genealogy, is perfect for you. This approach, spearheaded by genealogist Irisneri Alicea Flores, streamlines the research process while shedding light on the cultural and historical background of Puerto Rican and Hispanic descent more generally.

By following a four-step process, participants will be able to organize their existing knowledge, conduct interviews with family members, locate relevant family records, and set specific research objectives for their genealogical study. Using online genealogical platforms and historical documents can overwhelm beginners, but this presentation will help them manage their emotions and avoid repeating mistakes.

Spanish naming customs, historical jargon, and cultural context discovered in records are some of the research approaches that are exclusive to Hispanic and Puerto Rican populations. Participants will gain self-assurance in their genealogical work as the course covers typical research mistakes, ways to improve accuracy, and practical procedures.
