History of the White House, America's Executive Mansion
With Patricia Wells
Construction took eight years; a fire nearly destroyed it, it came dangerously close to collapsing, and someone almost painted it black. Although President Washington chose the design, he never really lived there. However, although Jefferson, Taft, and the Roosevelts made exceptional modifications, one of their genius architects came dangerously close to destroying the structure. It is the edifice that has been the most easily recognizable across the country for the past 225 years.
