From Saint to Santa
Dr. Michael Norris, former museum educator at the Metropolitan Musuem of Art will present this illustrated lecture.
Through centuries of art, much of it now in East Coast museums, he will explore the life of a minor Christian bishop in the Roman Empire, operating in the south of modern-day Turkey, who became one of Christianity’s most beloved saints. Then in American artwork he will show how he changes again—into America’s Santa Claus—part of America’s creation of the Christmas season and its trappings during the 19th century.
