CANCELED: Meet the Author: "Bittersweet Memories" with Barbara Hussmann Long
The current public health concern involving the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is continuing to unfold. The Library has been working closely with local and state authorities to make decisions that prioritize public health and safety. Per CDC guidelines for public gatherings, out of an abundance of caution, most events will be canceled or postponed until such time as more information is available and health officials provide updated guidance. At this time, these are only precautionary measures as we consider and care for the safety of our patrons. We are working on rescheduling the program in the future.
The Livingston Public Library presents a Meet The Author program with former Livingston resident and library employee Barbara H Long, who has written an inspirational memoir entitled “Bittersweet Memories: the life story of an immigrant daughter”
Barbara worked at the Livingston Library, primarily at the Help Desk from 1991-2005. She also served as President of the Friends of the Livingston Library.
Barbara’s story is that of a young daughter of a German scientist (called to work for the US government after WWII) who is transplanted to America; her new life is fraught with painful circumstances. Loneliness, divorce, and mental illness impact her formative years. From the devastation of war to the challenge of life in a new country, she encounters both the best and worst of human nature, bittersweet. Through it all, she comes to realize that everyone struggles, but can choose their own path. She keeps going in the belief that she'll become stronger and wiser. She survives and eventually thrives.
Barbara hopes that in her story, others may find encouragement and support to cope through difficult times.
The book is attracting many positive reviews, and copies will be available for purchase.
More information on the book can be found on Facebook at Bittersweet Memories and also at Bittersweetmemories.net.
