ART AT THE HOBOKEN LIBRARY - OCTOBER 2020 - ART AT HOME

Liz Ndoye will present a month of contemporary artists. She will talk about their personal point of view, about their art making, and the world of art around them. Students will then create art inspired by the thoughts and ideas of the artists she talks about.

Timeline is as follows for the month of October - Art at Home Series

OCT. 7, 2020 Kerry James Marshall, the great African American painter will be the first artist studied. Views of his magnificent paintings will be shown and talked about by Ndoye. Student artists will make their own paintings that tell a story about their own beliefs.

OCT. 14, 2020 The artist of focus for this week will be the African artist El Anatsui. El Anatsui is an artist who has used detritus and found objects to create magnificent weavings and sculptures. After looking closely at his pieces, students can try and create their own works of art using found materials around their homes.

OCT. 21, 2020 Susan Rothenburg, the brilliant figurative painter will be our inspiration for this session. We will focus on color and “dirty” as opposed to pure color. Why do we choose the colors that we use? Can non natural colors be used to convey thoughts and ideas? Students will then create water color paintings in colors that are only mixed and unfamiliar to them. This will be pure experimentation and pure fun!

OCT. 28, 2020 In honor of Halloween, we will watch learn about the artist Nick Caves’ sound suits. Fabulous costumes that conceal his gender, race, and appearance - they are the thick skin that he makes to harness his rage about racism and racial profiling. Students will then make their own masks with a variety of materials and found objects. Plastic take out containers, detergent bottles, beads, shells, fabric scraps etc.
