VIRTUAL Introduction to Madhubani Folk Painting from India

VIRTUAL Introduction to Madhubani Folk Painting from India

Discover the one of a kind, colorful world of Mithila or Madhubani painting,  a style of folk art form practiced by millions of women in the Mithila region of Bihar, India since ancient times, from a passionate practitioner of the art.

The paintings were drawn on floors or on walls, with the help of brush or pen made of bamboo. The artists prepared the colors from natural resources.  With themes ranging from nature, spirituality, social events and science, these are highly complex intricate paintings having elaborate structure, involving different types of geometrical figures and curves and with very rich color patterns. The paintings have often to be understood in conjunction with folk stories, folk songs and other folk traditions.

This presentation is by Nupur Nishith, a USA based artist, born in Madhubani district of Mithila region in India, who continues to paint in this tradition on a variety of surfaces.  She is very passionate about perpetuating the folk art and conducts workshops to spread it. Nupur was one of the pioneers in taking Mithila painting the digital route.

Nupur will give an overview of the folk art including its history, styles, common themes and motifs.  She will also touch upon how the advent of commercialization and the use of global and contemporary themes has changed it; how new artists are using new age tools and are also digitising it.

She will share some of her works and demonstrate the painting process using common motifs, patterns and techniques.
