People & Stories / Gente y Cuentos

People & Stories / Gente y Cuentos

Participants in this 5-week, virtual series will read and discuss a different short story each week.

The stories, by contemporary writers such as Chinua Achebe, Louise Erdrich, Jamaica Kincaid, Tim O'Brien and Alice Walker, show the best qualities of enduring literature: They are rich in poetic language and concerned with life's complications, discoveries and missing pieces.

Marcy Schwartz, a long time bilingual People & Stories coordinator, will lead the discussions. She is a published author, speaker, and professor of Latin American literature and culture at Rutgers University, where she serves as chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

Participants will receive a copy of the story via e-mail just before each session, which will be held on Zoom. After hearing the story read aloud, we will discuss the story's tensions and contrasts, language and characters, and how the themes touch all of us at this difficult time.

Teens and adults of all backgrounds are welcome; no preparation is required.
