Michelangelo urged his pupil, “Draw Antonio, draw, and don’t waste time!” During the Renaissance, drawing evolved from what was essentially copying to a creative exploration. Close observation brought a new realism to art. Artists made many preparatory studies before deciding on a final composition. We will examine some exceptional examples of draftsmanship and their companion paintings, that date from the 15^th to the 18th centuries.
