Heart-Shaped Perforated Paper Streamer Workshop

In this workshop, join Lauren in a craft project inspired by her recent trip to Mexico City. You will create a space for self-love as an everyday ritual. First, you will learn to make heart-shaped paper streamers inspired by the traditional Mexican craft called Papel Picada (perforated paper) which are colorful and elaborate cut-out paper decorations assembled together on a piece of string and pinned up in a special space. For our projects, we will use the heart-shape design in honor of self-love—the space within the cut-out heart is to symbolize the sacred act of making space to care for ourselves.

Papel Picada is also often included in an ofrenda, an altar of special objects. After completing this workshop, find a quiet place in your home to pin up your paper picado. Then, create your own self-love altar by gathering special objects together to place beneath your paper picado. You can include the objects created in workshops with Lauren earlier this month for your altar and ritual practices, such as the self-love journal, the Milagritos-inspired paper necklace, and the paper box — or you can gather your own special objects to practice whatever rituals you choose!

Materials:

Construction paper in different colors 
Scissors 
Embroidery needle and thread 
Watercolor set + paint brush + cup of water (optional)
