The Kids Across the Street
As an African-American visual artist, Jamarr (J.R.) Neyland’s work explores the trials, progress, and struggles of the black family. While reminiscing on his adolescent years in the Midwest, he developed a series that focuses on black youth. These images explore the entirety of their conflicts, fears, contemplations, joyous moments, and accomplishments as he draws from these emotional experiences. He finds inspiration for his work in current events, notably those in devastation and distress, but also in the triumphs and achievements of these individuals. He wants the viewer to create a dialogue between themselves and the subject, as the viewer begins to explore their interpretation of the subject’s story of trepidation or pleasure.
