Garden State Jazz Greats on Zoom featuring Rhoda Scott: via ZOOM

Hoboken Public Library presents Garden State Jazz Greats – Rhoda Scott Listening Session – December 7th at 6:30pm, via Zoom.

Come and join Jazz scholar Ben Young as he explores the majesty, style, and genius of New Jersey’s own jazz greats. Many of these names you may already know and all of them you should know as each of these innovators have left their indelible imprint on world culture through the great African American creation of Jazz.

Ben Young will discuss the lives and contributions of each of these home state heroes along with the musical and historical context to help illustrate what made each of their unique and singular artistic visions have such an impact.

December's featured artist will be organist and Dorothy native Rhoda Scott. Ms. Scott learned the organ as a youth at her father’s church and went on to lead a successful organ trio on the NJ jazz scene in the early 60’s. But most of Ms. Scott’s discography has been recorded in France, where she has lived for more than fifty years now, in step with other expatriate Jazzfolk from Kenny Clarke to Ricky Ford. Rhoda Scott has created a stream of well-regarded and swinging projects that started on the Barclay label, and nowadays involve her group Lady Quartet on records and in person.
