Refuge: Photography by Ed Fausty
Refuge
digital pigment photographs and graphics on Arches Text paper
Walking in the woods with camera has been a habit of mine for some years. I record subtle moments of heightened awareness. Lately I have been particularly drawn to the bleakness of winter, when the space opens up. At a certain point I allowed travails from outside to inform my observations. I began to take notice of agression, death and decay, but with an equanamous sense of the natural order of things. In working with the images, I eventually became interested in creating book forms and combining them with elements from the Covid pandemic and other challenges through which we have been living (and dying).
Some pieces are actual book folios sewn to background prints. They are sculptural and displayed in shadow box frames. Others, recently, are digital mockups of the former. They appear three-dimentional, but in fact are simple flat prints on paper.
The way I feel upon entering the woods is oddly similar to how I feel opening a book; equal parts comforting balm, curiosity and suspense; not a bad place to be.
