Art Lecture and Workshop with Liz Ndoye. Featured Artist - Yoshimoto Nara.
In this class we will delve into the art of Yoshimoto Nara. His most well-known and
repeated subjects are "big-headed girls" with piercing eyes, who one Nara scholar describes
as having "childlike expressions [that] resonate with adult emotions, their embodiment
of cuteness carries a dark humor, and any explicit cultural references are intertwined with
personal memories.” These are very pretty but troubling images and we will discuss whether
they are art - whether art should always be about beauty or whether art can carry other
important messages. Students will be invited to think of childhood images that they remember
and create paintings to express their feelings about those images.
Classes will be held in person at our library's main branch, located at 500 Park Ave, in the lower level, and virtually. All classes taught by Liz Ndoye.
